I fundamentally disagree with Alex Carlile on this particular issue, but such a cheap and flippant disregard for his otherwise pretty solid record of liberalism is a disgrace. If it is now open season on anyone who dissents from any detail of Party policy, then this is not a stance I wish to associate myself with.

Getting a public telling off from you is not something that makes me feel particularly proud, because you are one of the people I respect most in the party.

I get what you are saying, and I disagree with enough of our policy too. What I will say, though, is that civil liberties is a very core value, they are under threat from all sides and we do need to be unambiguously liberal on this because nobody else is going to be. This isn’t about not wanting a tax on sugar or being in favour of putting up income tax for the very rich. It’s not a detail, it’s a core value.

I know that Alex Carlile trod a path to secure the rights of transgender people way before anyone else did. For that he deserves admiration and recognition. His views on civil liberties do not take that away in the same way that Sarah Teather’s views on equal marriage don’t diminish her amazing work on immigration. It does worry me very much, though, that he could be in a position to influence our reaction to the Snoopers’ Charter.

I don’t agree with Caron on everything, but on this she’s spot on. It’s not about agreeing with every nuance of party policy – none of us agrees with every nuance of party policy – it’s about being so at odds with a core value that you make the whole party look ridiculous. Especially, in the case of the noble lord Carlile, when it can be painted by the national press as being done for the reason of lining his own pockets.
